Best Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

Oily skin can be tricky to tame, but the right system will bring balance to your complexion. Look and feel your best with a routine tailored to you.

A Smart Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

While naturally glowing skin is your hope and want, too much oil can make your face super shiny plus can lead to breakouts. Having the right elements in your routine every morning and evening will help reduce extra oil while promoting a healthy glow.

Choose the Right Cleanser

Make sure to use cleanser in both the morning and evening. Although your face may feel clean from last night’s cleansing routine, your body has been producing sebum/oil throughout the night.

The use of an exfoliating cleanser works well unless it’s too harsh or over-exfoliates your skin. While exfoliators away dirt and oils, it can strip away your important protective lipid barrier, causing imbalance with your skin.

This can lead to an imbalanced production of oil needed for balanced hydration and protection. It’s best to add deeper exfoliation to your routine separately, 1-3 times a week. Your skin will guide your usage. Contact Brian for further guidance.

Maintaining a good balance of natural oils is the goal. My PURIFYING CLEANSER is a fantastic option for consistent cleansing. This client favorite, contains foaming Yucca Root Extract which gently and deeply cleanses your skin. It contains Salix Alba - Willow bark extract which mildly and naturally exfoliates the skin removing dead skin cells to support a healthy skin environment—reducing acne, whiteheads and black heads. Your skin's oil production is in balance providing natural, fresh, glowing skin.

Benefits of Toner

This is an essential part of your routine, toner cleanses  and hydrates while reducing the appearance of pores. It helps prepare your face for the rest of your routine, and can reduce and balance your oil production.

Beware of toners that tout themselves as ‘natural’, when alcohol is one of the ingredients. Alcohol will create too much dryness, and may achieve the opposite effect you’re looking for.

Importance of Serum

A great serum has ingredients like vitamin C or retinol that will help smooth out uneven places and reduce fine lines. A serum will echo and layer upon the benefits of your toner, and is an ideal balancing agent.

Use a Quality Moisturizer

It may seem like moisturizing is less important if you have an overproduction of oil, but this simply is not true. Again, we’re trying to create a balance of oils. My OIL-FREE DAILY HYDRATING LOTION is used and loved by many. This hydrating moisturizer contains Sodium Hyaluronate which promotes the penetration of moisture packed liposomes. Liposomes deliver moisture deeper than water can travel on its own and contains the correct delivery means of Pro-Vitamin B5 providing proper levels of moisture on a cellular level. Dimethicone along with the Sodium Hyaluronate provide soothing, smooth comfort to your skin.

Teaching your skin that moisture is being consistently provided through your routine sends a balancing skin flora message which in turn balances your oil production.

Things to Embrace and Avoid in Your Skin Care Routine

  • Coconut Oil - While great for improving dryness, coconut oil is comedogenic. This means it can create a barrier that traps oils, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. The same principle applies to using shea butter and beeswax.
  • Alcohol in toners - As mentioned above, alcohol can be a sneaky ingredient that dries you out and is a potential irritant.
  • Lanolin - Made from the oil on sheep’s skin, this product can stimulate oil production. So it’s best for those wanting to reduce oils to leave it on the shelf.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - This is a common ingredient in many personal care products, but it can strip away moisture and lead to an increase in sebum production.

Additions to Your Skin Care Routine

Another important factor is your sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen with Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide, which are both proven antiseptic ingredients and great support clearing acne and controlling oil. UNDERWEAR SUNSCREEN is beloved by my Brian + MW clients.

Finally, including a masque periodically, will remove dirt and grime which lead to clogged pores. Brian + MW SUPER FIRM & LUMINOUS MASQUE loaded with a Kale Protein Blend (Kale, Carrot and Lemon) supports conditioning and moisturizing while promoting fresh, firm, detoxified, glowing skin.
