How Often Should I Exfoliate My Skin

Everyone wants fresh, radiant skin day in and day out. Exfoliation is one important way to get there! Striking the right balance between too little and too much exfoliation is key to the perfect complexion.

How Much Is Too Much?

Believe it or not, it is totally possible to over exfoliate skin! When we see dry patches popping up, especially around changes in weather or season, we tend to want to attack the area with strong and stringent exfoliants — both chemical and physical.

While exfoliating is definitely important, you want to make sure you’re not overdoing it. Harsh exfoliation can backfire big time. If you’re exfoliating more than three times a week, you’re actually doing your skin harm. Scrubbing your skin raw will cause irritation, redness, and unnecessary sensitivity.

Know Your Skin Type

There are many different types of exfoliators out there, each one designed to work specifically with a specific skin type. Since no person’s skin is like another’s, why should your skincare routine be the same? Different types of exfoliators include:

  • Fine-Grain Scrubs

Safe to use regularly and great for every skin type, finer grained scrubs are going to be the most gentle for your skin.

  • Coarse-Grain Scrubs

Larger grained scrubs are excellent for large dry patches of skin. This type of exfoliant is also great for the rest of your body. Many people forget the body when it comes to exfoliation. Your torso, arms, and legs also need regular exfoliation in order to retain moisture and feel soft to the touch.

  • AHA and BHA Chemical Exfoliants

The most intense of all exfoliants, chemical exfoliants, target not only the surface of the skin but also everything brewing beneath. Chemical reactions rather than physical friction work to slough away dead skin. Don’t overdo it with chemical exfoliants — be sure to know your skin type before using a product!

Overly oily skin is going to require 2-3 exfoliating sessions a week to control your overproduction of sebum. Dry, flaky skin won’t want to be scrubbed away too often — in fact, to avoid excessive irritation, you might want to skip the exfoliating step until your skin is feeling more balanced. Combination skin would benefit from exfoliating 2-3 times a week to make sure everything remains balanced and in control.

How Often to Exfoliate Your Skin

Exfoliating your skin with a gentle physical exfoliant or a chemical one once a week is more than enough to ensure bright, fresh, and youthful looking skin. Be gentle — my SUPER CLARITY REFINISHING CREME is the perfect skin polishing creme, designed to gently slough away dead skin to reveal the beautiful glowing skin beneath.

Similar to expensive microdermabrasion treatments, the Volcanic Micro-crystals in my creme exfoliant will help shrink pores, hydrate, and resurface the skin. This product is gentle enough to use every day if need be. Follow with my RE-CREATION CALM & PROTECT MOISTURE CREME to ensure moisture is being locked into your skin all day and all night.
